PHS 110 - Physical Science(4 credits) 45 lecture hours; 45 lab hours Prerequisites: MAT 092 , and REN 092 or ELI 082G and ELI 082W , or satisfactory ACCUPLACER or ACCUPLACER-ESL scores This course, a laboratory directed, inquiry-based course designed to meet the Category III General Education requirement (Biological and Physical Sciences), is required in several education majors and is for in-service teachers. The course presents fundamental concepts and principles related to the physical sciences. The main topics are properties of matter (mass, area, volume, density), heat, electric circuits, light and motion. A journal is maintained and a written project is required. Students do laboratories in collaborative groups. Significant short inquiry-based laboratories are used, supported by short lectures and demonstrations. Computers are used for some of the laboratories, demonstrations and as part of the required project.
