Lab Animal Science Certificate

The Lab Animal Science Certificate is designed to train students to be lab animal care and handling technicians or assistants. Lab animal care and handling technicians’/assistants’ responsibilities include: feeding, watering, and examining laboratory animals for signs of illness, disease, or injury in laboratories; cleaning and disinfecting cages and work areas, and sterilizing laboratory and surgical equipment; providing routine post-operative care, administering medication orally or topically; and preparing samples for laboratory examination under the supervision of veterinary or laboratory animal technologists or technicians, veterinarians, or scientists.

Suggested Sequence of Courses

** All BCCC students must meet the College’s Computer Literacy requirements in order to receive a degree or a certificate. All first-time, full- and part-time degree and certificate seeking students are required to complete the PRE 100  course within the first six credits.

Program Learning Outcomes


  • Students will demonstrate the ability to conduct necessary calculations required by animal labs.

  • Students will demonstrate the ability to communicate professionally with physicians, veterinarians, scientists, researchers, and technicians in animal labs or biomedical labs.

  • Students will demonstrate the ability to follow a typical industry Standard Operating Procedure with accuracy and precision in animal labs.

  • Note: Student has the option to take the CLT Exam. Passing the exam allows the student to avoid taking CLT 100.
