Arts and Sciences Transfer Degree, Music Area of Concentration

Pursue your dream and study music at Baltimore City Community College, whether you are a community member looking to enrich your life by taking a course in music or a full-time student with the goal of transferring to a university to complete a bachelor’s degree.

Studies include: Composition, Conducting, Ear Training, Music History, Music Theory, Piano, Performances, Private Lessons, and Sight Singing.

With an associate degree in music, you are able to secure a career position based upon your specialty area in the industry as a business music manager, educational music coach, performer, production manager, song writer, or a sound engineer technician.


Suggested Sequence of Courses

** All BCCC students must meet the College’s Computer Literacy requirements in order to receive a degree or a certificate. All first-time, full- and part-time degree and certificate seeking students are required to complete the PRE 100  course within the first six credits.

Program Learning Outcomes


  • Explain various musical genres and stylistic periods.

  • Analyze the usage of elements of music in aural examples representing traditions from various style periods and world cultures.

  • Determine factors that influence musicians in specific historical eras and places.

  • Use standard musical notation symbols.

  • Play with expression and technical accuracy a stylistically varied repertoire of instrumental literature.

  • Sing with expression and technical accuracy a stylistically varied repertoire of vocal literature.

  • Formulate, apply, and communicate criteria for evaluating personal performances and the performances of others.

  • Describe how musical expression reflects individual, social, political, and ethical issues.

  • Compare and explain value of music, functions of music, roles of musicians, and conditions under which music is performed in various world cultures.
