ESL 3499 - Low Beginning 72 hours This 72-hour course provides instruction targeted at adult English learners (ELs) based on the results of the student’s CASAS placement exam. The primary purpose of the course is to engage ELs with real-world, meaningful interaction in pair and group activities to accelerate the acquisition of English skills in reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Activities and exercises from the student text- and workbook, in addition to supplementary learning materials and resources, promote and reinforce communication in life and workplace skills. Students build proficiency by responding to simple questions on familiar topics, such as food, shopping, housing, and health. In addition, students practice following oral and written instructions, interpreting public signs, consumer advertisements, and workplace announcements and policies.
